It seems that the Sophomores paid close attention to the Varsity’s last 2 victories as they played 32 minutes of high intensity basketball with a smothering defense in route to a 58-39 victory over the Hall Sophomores.  So the fans were looking forward to another such game by the Varsity but instead, although the Rockets came out in their recently very effective 1-2-2 zone, they played soft.  Instead of a 1-2-2 which made it difficult for their opponent to pass on the perimeter the defense appeared to be a 3-2 with little pressure on the perimeter.  In spite of this, the Rockets used superior offense and maintained a comfortable 8 to 10 point lead during the 1st half.  After halftime, the Rockets found their defensive energy, but as often is the case, when you don’t put away an opponent when you should, they start to believe and Hall found the range from beyond the arc.  Hall was able to reduce the Rocket lead to as little as 4 points in the 3rd quarter and 5 points in the 4th quarter.  However with a good offensive push the Rockets ended up with a 16 point victory, a margin which did not tell the story of the game.

The best news on the night was that this game marked the first time that all Rockets were available to play as Joe Linton began his 2009-10 season.  The Rockets had 4 players in double figures with Tevin Rumley claiming honors with 21 points.  Dylan Austin had 13, Matt Lauts 12, and Jake Junis 11 points.  Gordo Barron led the Rockets with 4 assists and Shay Brown had 3 steals.  Unfortunately the Rockets only shot 58% on free throws although Lauts and Brown were perfect on the night.

Hall (6-13, 0-5) opened the game with a fieldgoal and this 2 point lead would be the only one they would enjoy on the evening.  Rock Falls (11-7, 3-2) responded with a 9-2 run which Lauts began with an athletic post move leading to a reverse layup and was followed by Junis feeding Austin for a 3 pointer.  After a Hall fieldgoal, Rumley scored on a drive and Lauts on a putback.  On the Hall possession, Brown stole the ball, dished to Barron who fed Rumley who slammed it home and all appeared well in Rocket land (11-4, 3:08).  For the balance of the period, turnovers were traded as were points.  For the Rockets, Lauts knocked down 2 free throws and Barron fed Rumley for a layup (15-8).

The 2nd period had numerous turnovers with Hall committing 7 of the 12.  Rock Falls outscored Hall in the early going 8-3 to build their lead to 12 points.  Rumley knocked down a 15’ jumper; Lauts fed Rumley for a layup; Brown passed to Austin who dropped in a short range jumper, and Rumley fed Lauts who nailed an 8’ jumper (23-11, 3:35).  Following this, Hall scored 2 fieldgoals sandwiching a 12’ jumper by Lauts (assist Austin) and then several minutes were consumed with turnovers and missed shots.  This was ended when Brown stole the ball, advanced it to Barron who passed to Austin for the layup.  Hall responded with a 3 pointer (their first of six on the night), but Barron countered when he passed to Rumley for a layup to complete scoring in the half (29-18).

In the all important first 3 minutes of the 3rd period Hall was able to whittle the Rocket lead to 7 points (31-24, 5:04) scoring on a 3 pointer, a free throw and a field goal and aided by 2 Rocket turnovers.  The only Rocket score was Junis on a fast break layup (assist Rumley).  Hall continued to erode the Rocket lead as they nailed 2 more trifectas and several fieldgoals.  Rocket scoring during this period was on a 10’ jumper by Rumley, an Austin layup (assist Lauts) and 2 free throws by Brown (37-33, 2:38).  Lauts then knocked down 2 free throws followed by turnovers and missed shots by each side until Barron stole the ball which allowed Brown to drive for a fast break layup.  Hall scored last to reduce the Rocket lead back to 6 points as the period ended (41-35).

Junis who was serving time in the penalty box (the bench) during the 3rd period due to foul trouble led the Rocket offense in the 4th period and started this by nailing a long ball (assist Chappell) on the first possession.  Hall immediately matched this with a long ball of their own.  Later Chappell stole the ball and fed Junis for a layup.  Hall would score by converting 3 of 4 free throws and brought the deficit to only 5 points (46-41, 6:28).  This would be their last challenge as the Rockets stepped on the gas and outscored Hall the rest of the way, 17-6, finally putting this one away.  The scoring sequence for the Rockets was; short jumper by Rumley; layup by Rumley (assist JC McNinch); putback by Austin; short jumper by Junis; free throw by Rumley; fast break layup by Rumley (assist Junis); a Brown steal and layup; fast break layup by Austin (assist Rumley); and a drive by Junis.
