Academic Spotlight: Business Department

By Brenda Fiorini

January 26, 2010

The Business Department at RFHS offers a variety of courses to help promote necessary skills and a fundamental understanding of various business concepts.  Mrs. Fiorini and Mrs. Smith are responsible for teaching the all courses within the department.  Listed below is the name of each business course and a brief description:

Intro. to Computers introduces basic keyboarding skills as well as basic formatting applications with Microsoft Word and Excel programs.

Computer Concepts is a year-long class that offers more in depth instruction in business applications with Microsoft Office 2007 – Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Publisher
Web Design is new this year and will offer instruction in on-line web design and publishing for the business world. Microsoft software – Web Expressions will be used.

Consumer Ed. – the business department shares this course with Home Ec. Dept. Most sections are taught by Heidi Ripley.

Business Law introduces students to a variety of laws and concepts dealing with legal issues – personal and business related.

Accounting 1 introduces students to basic bookkeeping skills and procedures needed for a services business set up as a proprietorship and a merchandising business set up as a partnership.

Accounting 2 introduces students to basic bookkeeping skills and procedures needed for a merchandising business set up as a corporation. Both courses incorporate automated accounting on the computer.

Marketing has taken on an entrepreneurial approach this year helping students learn how to develop their own “Teen Business” – developing an idea, creating a product or service, targeting a market, and determining pricing and promotional strategies.

Another attractive feature of the Business Department is Room 133. During the 2008-2009 school year, Room 133 received new computers and monitors. These computers are more capable of handling graphic intensive software (Adobe programs) used by Mrs. Shore’s graphic arts classes and yearbook class. The Business Department at RFHS provides an opportunity for everyone.
